O-Ring Installation Guide — How to Fit O-Rings Correctly

O-Ring installation guide — how to fit O-Rings without damaging them, lubrication, groove inspection, and common installation mistakes that cause premature seal failure.

O-Ring Installation — Step by Step

  1. Inspect the groove. Check for burrs, sharp edges, scratches and contamination. A damaged groove will damage the O-Ring immediately on fitting.
  2. Check the O-Ring. Inspect for cuts, flat spots or contamination. Never use an O-Ring with a cut or nick across the cross-section.
  3. Lubricate. Apply a thin film of compatible lubricant (compatible with the elastomer and the process fluid). Do not use petroleum grease on EPDM or Silicone O-Rings.
  4. Fit without tools. Push the O-Ring into the groove with your fingers. Avoid sharp tools, dental picks or screwdrivers — these cut the seal.
  5. Do not twist. A twisted O-Ring will leak immediately. Check for spiral set after fitting.
  6. Assemble carefully. If the O-Ring must pass over a thread, port or edge during assembly, protect it with a sleeve, PTFE tape wrap or chamfer.
  7. First pressurisation. Apply pressure slowly on first use — rapid pressurisation of a newly fitted O-Ring can displace it before it has seated.
