Viton™ AED

High-hardness FKM engineered to prevent Anti-Explosive/Rapid Gas Decompression failures in high-pressure systems.

Overview

Compound profile

Viton AED refers to Anti-Explosive Decompression (also called Rapid Gas Decompression, RGD) resistant seals and O-rings, made from specialized high-hardness Viton/FKM fluoroelastomer. In high-pressure gas systems, dissolved gas can migrate into a standard O-ring under pressure; if pressure drops suddenly, that trapped gas expands explosively inside the rubber, blistering or rupturing it. AED-grade compounds are formulated with controlled porosity and hardness specifically to resist this failure mode. FITCO supplies AED-grade O-rings for high-pressure oil & gas and process applications where rapid pressure cycling is a known risk.

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS
  • Subsea and wellhead high-pressure gas seals
  • Downhole tool seals with rapid pressure cycling
  • Gas pipeline and compressor station valve seals
  • Any high-pressure system with fast depressurization cycles
Specification
Temperature range-20°C to +200°C
Hardness range85–95 Shore A
Relative cost$$$$
ResistsSame broad chemical resistance as standard FKM, plus resistance to explosive/rapid gas decompression failure
Avoid withLow-pressure static applications — AED's hardness and cost aren't justified without genuine RGD risk
StandardsAS568 / ISO 3601 / BS 4518
